Frequently Asked Questions My job involves shouting ‘sale!!’ every time I put the phone down. Can I become a Desker? In a word, no. Unfortunately, you have sold your soul to the devil and therefore can never reach the kingdom of Brighton Desk Space. Nothing personal, it’s just that people who only need a desk and a phone to do business can be very distracting in an open-plan workspace. I am an artist working with large amounts of paint and very big canvasses that I have to lay out on the floor. Can I become a desker? Unfortunately, no. This is a desk-based environment best suited to people whose creative output involves the use of a keyboard and a mouse, although we’re certainly not averse to the odd cutting mat, scalpel and tin of good old-fashioned Spray Mount. Good luck with your work though. Can I rent more than one desk at a time? Yes, and no. If you’re a freelancer and you want to rent an extra desk from time to time because you need to bring someone else in on a project, that’s fine and dandy. However, Brighton Desk Space is not really suited to small businesses with two or more staff. Its philosophy is to provide a productive, supportive workplace for solo freelancers who may have begun to talk to themselves a little more often than is healthy. How long can I rent a desk for? You can rent a desk for as little as a day, and we have a couple of desk spaces put aside for ‘Hot Deskers’. Most of the space though is given over to longer-term Deskers, and you can rent for three, six or twelve months. Is it cheaper to rent for a longer period? Yes, you get a much better deal on a twelve month rent. See our signing up page. What are the opening hours? As a regular Desker you get your own set of keys and alarm tag, which means that you can come and go whenever you want. Access for Hot Deskers is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m Monday to Friday, but with enough notice we can often accommodate a more flexible need. Does rental include a phone line? No, but you can arrange to have your own landline installed at your desk (and most of our Deskers have). Is there an expectation to collaborate with other Deskers? Not at all. First and foremost, the space is for you to run your freelance business without interruption and however you see fit. You may already work with people who have similar skills to other Deskers, but as this is not the freemasons, you need never feel obliged to hook up with any of your fellow Deskers unless you both agree that that would be a damn fine idea. Can I play my music really loud? The rule is ‘ask’. Usually, during the day, it’s headphones only, but if everyone agrees we sometimes enjoy a shared musical experience. If just one person needs it to be quiet in order to concentrate, we all respect that. There is no majority vote. Of course, if you’re here on your own, by all means crank it up. Can I wander around the office talking loudly into my mobile phone? You could try... As with any shared environment, considerate telephone use is much appreciated. How come Brighton has all the fun? We have big plans to create Deskers in other UK towns and cities. Watch this space. Who created this fantastic website? This website is a product of its environment of course. Witty repartee was from Paul, images came from Pete and www.voodoo was applied by Mark. |
